Mark Making and Early Writing: Making their mark

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at childminders who would like to gain a deeper understanding of how mark making skills progress and develop in the early years and how opportunities can be further enhanced in their settings

Course content

Children will begin their journey towards writing, not by producing letters or words but by simply making marks. Mark making is much more than just a scribble!

We will explore typical development starting at birth and focus on understanding how physical development plays an important role in supporting children to create those marks.

During this practical session, we will also explore how to provide an environment that is rich with mark making opportunities. We will be reflecting throughout and considering if enough opportunities are provided for children to mark make in different areas of your setting such your garden or kitchen and how mark making can be encouraged even with your reluctant writers.

There will be opportunities to take away ideas, to make your own mark making resources, and also to share ideas with others.
