Creating Eager Readers

(formerly Developing early reading)

Who is this course for?

Settings working with two-, three- and four-year-olds who are looking to gain expert knowledge about how young children learn to read and how to use this knowledge to help children blossom into early readers.

This session is essential for those settings undertaking the Lancashire Quality Award – Early Reading.

Course content

This session is centred on five key literacy tips to support young children learning to read focusing on the reading comprehension and how we can inspire a love of reading in all children.

The session reflects on key concepts and pre-reading skills for babies and young children, identifying some key reading behaviours that children might display that practitioners can use to identify next steps in their reading progression. We will look at a range of teaching strategies that will help children make connections between stories and their own lives, begin to embed story structure into their play and ideas to expand children's understanding of story and story vocabulary.

There are opportunities to reflect on our understanding of a 'rich language environment' that supports reading and to consider what reading progression will look like in an effective early reading setting.
