Haslingden Old Road

Repairs to retaining wall

We're carrying out repairs to a retaining wall on Haslingden Old Road (B6236) in Hyndburn to allow the road to be reopened and diversions to be removed.

This road is a key link between Haslingden, Accrington and Blackburn. Work is needed to rebuild the wall following a major landslip which occurred during heavy rain in early January 2025.

The significant scale of the landslip, which moved around 2,500 metric tonnes of earth, means that the road is currently not safe for vehicles to use.

Planned work

Work has been ongoing since the landslip happened to make the site safe and prepare for the road to be repaired.

This includes clearing the site of debris and vegetation, bore hole surveys, ecological surveys and topographical surveys.

We are aiming to keep to the following timeline to complete the repairs and reopen Haslingden Old Road. We'll share more pictures and information from the site as work progresses.

  • August to September 2025 - Completion of surveys to inform the repairs needed to stabilise the embankment, divert utilities, improve drainage and rebuild the retaining wall
  • October 2025 to January 2026 – Invitation to tender and appointment of contractor
  • February 2026 - Start of repair work
  • Summer 2026 - Repairs completed and road reopened
