A589 Greyhound Bridge refurbishment – Department for Transport local highways maintenance challenge fund submission

Lancashire County Council has been successful in its bid for £3.711million from the Department for Transport's (DfT) Challenge Fund Tranche 2A in 2017/18, to support the refurbishment of Greyhound Bridge in Lancaster.

Greyhound Bridge is located in Lancaster city centre, Lancashire and carries the westbound A589 (Greyhound Bridge Road) over the River Lune. It forms an important part of Lancaster’s gyratory system providing the only westbound crossing of the river in Lancaster.

The scheme would comprise a complete refurbishment of Greyhound Bridge, safeguarding its future, improving resilience and supporting local economic growth by preventing the need to implement weight restrictions requiring significant HGV and bus diversions.
