Member Development
We are committed to supporting all our councillors through our Member Development Programme. We encourage you to take part in the many training and development activities we offer. For more information please contact Catherine Earnshaw – Member Development on 01772 533306 or email member.development@lancashire.gov.uk.
Our Councillor Essentials Programme is a programme of 'essentials' training for all county councillors (new and existing) including; Code of Conduct, Local Government Finance, Corporate Parenting, Counter Terrorism & Prevent, Health & Wellbeing for Councillors and Governance & Decision Making.
Our committee specific training programme is scheduled throughout May and June each year before the commencement of the new committee cycle, for committee members and councillors who may be called to deputise on a particular committee. Specific chairing skills training is arranged for chairs and deputy chairs of committees.
Our Bite Size Briefings are held online in short easily digestible sessions, you can join these live or watch them later. We work with councillors to make sure the programme meets your needs but if there is something you are particularly interested in, or think you would like support with, just let us know.
Our 'Councillors' Learning Quarter' is a series of video podcasts or 'vodcasts' aimed specifically for County Councillors. These ''vodcasts' are a maximum 15 minute pre-recorded briefing session, which county councillors can view in their own time. These micro sessions are aimed to provide a 'snap shot' of a service, development of service delivery or to explain initiatives or processes specific to county councillors
Mindful that councillors are not always available to attend all Member Development sessions due to other commitments, sessions are recorded, allowing councillors the opportunity to view the recording in their own time. It is also a useful training resource for all councillors to review the sessions.
Our Member Development Programme and support for councillors is overseen by our cross party Councillor Support Steering Group, who meet every 6 weeks. The remit of the group is;
- To champion and promote the development and support of all councillors
- To champion and promote learning and development opportunities (internal and external) that meet individual and corporate requirements
- To review training and development impact/output
- To champion and promote the production of induction programme and ongoing training and development programmes
- To collect views from fellow councillors on training and support issues and to feedback on progress to the political groups
- To take a leading role in helping the authority to achieve North West Charter for Elected Member Development
- To champion and promote support services for councillors with; Disabilities, Communications, Health and Safety, Health and Wellbeing etc.
- To receive regular reports on Digital Services support for councillors including ICT hardware and software developments
