Information Governance

Information Governance (IG) is a set of controls used to manage information throughout the county council. It is essential that everyone who handles information on behalf of the county council understands their legal responsibilities and the impact that failing to meet these legal obligations can have on the organisation and the individuals concerned.

Councillors have three data protection roles;

  • Member of the Council
  • Representing your Division / Constituents
  • Representing your party

Councillors have access to confidential, personal, and sensitive information. It is imperative that they handle this data with the utmost care and responsibility. Any breach of data handling protocols could result in personal liability for the councillor involved. Therefore, it is essential Councillors remain fully informed and compliant with all relevant data protection requirements when handling personal information within each of their roles.

All councillors are required to complete the MeLearning IG eLearning modules at the beginning of their term of office.

The council has a suite of Information Governance Policies and Guidance Documents that set out in more detail how information should be handled, and these are available on the Corporate Information Governance or the C First pages of the Intranet. Reporting Breaches

When a data breach occurs, e.g. you lose your council owned equipment or paper records, or you share personal information with the wrong person, then you need to let the council's Data Protection Officer know immediately.

The council has an online form where you can report information security incidents, or you can contact the council's Data Protection Officer by emailing DPO@lancashire.gov.uk if you need assistance.
