Councillor Allowances

As a county councillor you are entitled to allowances to support you in your role, as set out in the Members' Allowance Scheme. The main allowances provided by the Scheme are:

Basic– £14,301 per year, paid in monthly instalments.  All councillors are entitled to this allowance, though you may opt out of receiving it. The Basic Allowance is intended to recognise the time commitment of your role as well as any incidental costs.

Special Responsibility – If you hold a role with extra duties, or special responsibilities, you are entitled to receive an extra allowance to recognise the time commitment of that role. This is also paid in monthly instalments, and the amount varies depending on the role you hold.

Carers – If you have caring responsibilities, you may claim for the actual, receipted expenditure of some care costs, to allow you to undertake your role. The maximum total amount you may claims in one year is £2,062.

Travel – You may claim for the cost of travel for council business. This includes travel from home to County Hall for meetings, either by car (a set mileage for this journey will be agreed with you) or by public transport (receipts required).

You must submit any claims using the electronic Members' Allowances system, on or before the 4th of each month. Please note that claims must be submitted within two months of the period to which they relate or a payment will not be made. For help or advice, please email membersallowances@lancashire.gov.uk.

Please note all rail travel and accommodation must be booked through the council's Procurement Team. Please contact julie.trafford@lancashire.gov.uk for more information.
