Project Gigabit - Public review launch in Lot 9 Lancashire

The government is on a mission to deliver lightning-fast, reliable broadband to everyone in the UK and is investing £5 billion in Project Gigabit to ensure that hard-to-reach communities are not left out. Building Digital UK (BDUK) is carrying out a Public Review to help identify areas in Lot 9 Lancashire that may be suitable for future public funding for gigabit-capable broadband.

BDUK is seeking information and supporting evidence from suppliers - in relation to the presence of gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure within the project area.

They wish to hear from all relevant stakeholders - including the public, businesses, internet service providers and broadband infrastructure operators - particularly in relation to the proposed mapped eligible areas.

To respond to this Public Review, and for more information, please see BDUK’s page.

Superfast Lancashire

Lancashire launched the Superfast Lancashire Programme in 2013 followed by an extension project. Including commercial build Lancashire achieved 98% coverage of 24mbps across Lancashire.

UK Gigabit Programme

The UK Gigabit Programme or 'Project Gigabit' is a £5 billion government infrastructure project that brings together everything the government is doing to enable and deliver fast and reliable digital connectivity for the entire country. Through one of the fastest rollouts in Europe, 60% of households will have access to gigabit speeds by the end of 2021 - a huge leap from 2019 when it was just one in ten.

Gigabit vouchers

The Government is providing up to £210m worth of voucher funding as immediate help for people in rural areas experiencing slow broadband speeds in rural areas.

Vouchers worth up to £1,500 for homes and £3,500 for businesses help to cover the costs of installing gigabit broadband to people’s doorsteps.

Open Market Review - Lancashire (Lot 9)

Building Digital UK (BDUK) has developed a centrally managed procurement approach for Project Gigabit contracts, which is a change from the approach adopted for Superfast Broadband contracts which were managed by Local Bodies (LCC in Lancashire).  In addition, delivery will be based upon identified individual premises, using UPRN codes, rather than post code based as was the case for Superfast Broadband contracts.

Eligibility of premises will be assessed through an Open Market Review (OMR) to identify those areas which currently are not deemed commercially viable by suppliers, i.e. where no infrastructure exists or is planned to be built within the next three years (plans beyond this period, if available, will be accepted).
