Lancashire celebrates Youth Work Week 2021

01/11/2021

Lancashire County Council is celebrating the valued role that youth workers and young people play in our county as part of this year’s Youth Work Week campaign.

Youth work helps young people to learn about themselves, others and society, and is based on the belief that young people should be empowered to get involved in any decisions made that might affect them.

Led by the National Youth Agency, whose mission is to transform the lives of young people through the power of youth work, the annual campaign will run from Monday 1 November to Sunday 7 November.

This year’s theme is ‘Champions of Youth Work’, which will encourage young people, youth workers and those that commission, fund or lead youth work to tell the world how they support and champion the young people around them.

County Councillor Cosima Towneley, cabinet member for children and families, said: "We would like to say thank you to all the children and young people who get involved and have their say about services in Lancashire, as well as the incredibly hard-working professionals who support them.

"We believe that children and young people should be as involved as possible in decisions about their lives, and our Children and Family Wellbeing Service provides plenty of opportunities to do just that.”

Edwina Grant OBE, executive director for education and children’s services, said: “This campaign is a great way to highlight and raise awareness of the various participation groups we have on offer, including the Lancashire Youth Council and POWAR, a group that influences decision making for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

“Our youth workers are inspiring, as are the young people who regularly have their say, and we want to thank them for all that they do to improve the lives of children and young people in Lancashire – who are at the very heart of what we do.”

Lancashire County Council will be showcasing its youth workers and young champions on their Twitter, Facebook and Youth Zone Facebook pages from 1-7 November.
