Revamped Rhyddings School officially opened
Monday, November 8, 2021
A ceremony to mark the official opening of the redeveloped Rhyddings School in Oswaldtwistle has been held.
The event, which was attended by the Chairman of Lancashire County Council Barrie Yates, County Councillor Jayne Rear, cabinet member for education and skills, and Hyndburn MP Sara Britcliffe, alongside other dignitaries, saw the unveiling of new science, SEN and kitchen and dining room facilities.
These buildings replaced the school's old east and west blocks, which had to be demolished in 2019 after serious problems with the structure of the buildings were discovered.
The redevelopment, costing over £10milion, has also seen the existing school buildings revamped.
Staff and pupils returned to the site earlier this term following a two-year stint where the school was relocated to the site of the former Hameldon Community School in Burnley while the rebuilding work took place.
Andrew Williams, headteacher at Rhyddings, said: "We're all absolutely delighted to be back home in Oswaldtwistle. The redevelopment was completed ready for the start of term and the facilities are fantastic.
"It was a huge shock for all of us to find that the buildings had to be demolished and we had to relocate.
"This presented a huge challenge in itself, but when you throw in the coronavirus pandemic, you have to credit pupils, parents, their families and school staff for their remarkable efforts, which meant we had a fully functioning school in very difficult circumstances.
"It's a tremendous feeling to be back in our school. Not only do we have new science, catering, SEN and pastoral facilities, the existing buildings have had a significant refurbishment, giving them a new lease of life.
"We've returned to massively improved, modern facilities and we've grown even stronger from experiencing what we have over the last two years. We're starting the next chapter at Rhyddings with confidence.
"Thanks to parents, pupils school staff and the county council for their support during this difficult and testing time."
The redevelopment project was managed by Lancashire County Council, which also funded the improvements.
Cllr Yates, who officially opened the revamped school alongside Cllr Rear, said: "This is a tremendous school with much-improved modern facilities. Everyone in the school community has battled on through some tough times over the last couple of years, but these new facilities and the excellent staff at Rhyddings mean they can now look to a bright future together."
Cllr Rear said: "The teachers have done a superb job to ensure young people have continued to have a great education, despite the issues the school have faced and the difficulties of the pandemic. They are a strong community and what they've been through has only made them stronger.
"The new facilities are fantastic and together with the excellent staff, they will make Rhyddings, which is at the heart of the community once again, a great school for many years to come."
