Older people in Rossendale get an income boost
Monday, September 7, 2020
A benefit take-up campaign in Rossendale has so far left 65 households, aged 75 and over, better off by a total of over £223,000 a year.
They have also received a further £39,500 in back pay.
This campaign was organised by Lancashire County Council's Welfare Rights Service in partnership with Rossendale Borough Council.
The borough council contacted over-75s in their area and people were asked to apply for a free and confidential benefits check completed by Welfare Rights.
With the help of welfare rights officers, those households who were missing out on benefits they were entitled to have secured an average of an extra £66 per week each.
County Councillor Shaun Turner, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: "This is great news for some of our older residents in Rossendale, who have had a welcome boost to their incomes.
"Staff are still working through the claims, so we may be able to help even more older people yet.
"As well as the hardworking staff of our Welfare Rights Service, I'd also like to thank our partners at Rossendale Borough Council, for their help in making this campaign such a success.
"This extra money is bound to make a real difference to some older people.
Councillor Steve Hughes, Rossendale Borough Council's cabinet member with responsibility for revenues and benefits, said: “It is important that all people claim the benefits they are entitled to. I am glad that Rossendale Council was able to be part of this and that so many people have benefitted from this good work.
“I would urge pensioners to get in contact with the Welfare Rights Service and have their free confidential benefits check as they could be a lot better off.”
Anyone over pension age who would like a free and confidential benefit check can phone the Welfare Rights Pensioners Advice Line on 01772 533321 or email email@example.com
