Fylde A-road to be closed for bridge works
Wednesday, June 17, 2020
Lancashire County Council is alerting people to a closure this weekend on one of the main routes linking the Fylde coast and central Lancashire.
The A586 Blackpool Road will be closed where it crosses the River Wyre at the village of St Michael's on Wyre for work to replace a footbridge.
The closure will be in place from 10pm on Friday 19 June until 6am on Sunday 21 June.
A diversion will be signed via A and B roads which is suitable for all traffic including HGVs, however most people will be able to use much shorter routes to get around the closure using local roads.
The footbridge which is due to be replaced provides access for pedestrians as the historical road bridge carrying Blackpool Road over the River Wyre is too narrow for a footway.
The old steel bridge is due to be lifted out and replaced with a new aluminium one, with Blackpool Road needing to be closed in order to accommodate the crane being used to lift the bridges.
Surveys have shown that the existing steel bridge is deteriorating, with the aluminium one expected to need less maintenance, minimising the potential for future costs and disruption. Once installed, the new St Michael's Footbridge will qualify as the longest single span aluminium footbridge in the UK.
David Leung, group manager for design and construction, said: "The replacement of St Michael's Footbridge is part of our wider annual programme of investment and maintenance of bridges and structures.
"We've scheduled this work for a weekend to minimise disruption as far as possible, and I'm grateful for people's patience while we carry out this essential work.
"If you’re planning to travel in this area from late Friday to early on Sunday morning please plan your journey around the closure. There will be a signed diversion suitable for all vehicles including HGVs, however most people will be able to use alternative routes on local roads to avoid it."
The diversion route in a clockwise direction is via the A586 (Blackpool Road) towards Catterall, A6 to Broughton, B5269 towards Singleton, A585 Fleetwood Road and A586 (Blackpool Road). Access will be maintained throughout on Blackpool Road for pedestrians and cyclists.
In case for any reason the work can't be completed this weekend a contingency plan allows for a further closure of Blackpool Road at the same times over the following weekend.
Passengers using Stagecoach Service 42 on Saturday should check with the operator for changes to the service.
