New primary school book award to be launched

Tuesday, November 05, 2019

A new book award for six and seven-year-olds will be launched this month.

The Brilliant Book Award will be held on Thursday 14 November from 9.15am to 12.00 noon at the Mercure Hotel, Samlesbury, Preston.

Award-winning picture book illustrator, Debi Gliori, will speak at the event. Debi is the creator of many children's books including the Mr. Bear picture book series. Debi will talk about her new book, Bookworm.

Around 100 primary schools are expected to participate in the new award, developed by Lancashire's School Library Service.

The award runs until March 2020 and involves thousands of children from Lancashire primary schools reading new books and voting for their favourite.

The main aim of the award is to encourage children aged six and seven years to develop a love of reading, and to discuss what they have read with each other.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: "I think that this is another excellent initiative, and it has my firm support.

"I'm keen that we do all we can to encourage children to read. Even better if we can promote a love of books that remains for life.

"We are fully committed to maintaining the high levels and standards of literacy in Lancashire and I'll take a keen interest in who's won next March."

County Councillor Phillippa Williamson, cabinet member for children, young people and schools, said: "This is a great initiative. It will make reading fun for younger children, and it is also something they can do with their families and friends.

"I hope that it helps us to get more children reading for pleasure, more regularly and feeling more enthusiastic about reading.

"Ultimately we hope that it is an engaging way to raise literacy levels and to embed reading for pleasure into formal education. Importantly, it demonstrates the impact of schools working with our School Library Service to run effective schemes."
