Our trading standards team is urging people to beware of fraudsters pretending to be from HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC).
The scammers have been targeting older and vulnerable people in East Lancashire.
Victims receive a phone call from someone purporting to be a police officer. They sound very convincing and say the victim is under investigation and needs to pay an amount of money to avoid prosecution.
The HMRC will never contact people in this way. Any police officer contacting you will give their name and collar number, the station they work from and a reference number.
If you're in any doubt you can always verify the number by ringing 101.
