Lancashire County Council's flagship programme to reopen libraries which closed almost two years ago marked another milestone today as Earby celebrated the opening of a new and improved facility.
County Councillor Aidy Riggott, lead member for economic development and cultural services, opened the library in its new home at Earby Community Centre on New Road.
Following the closure of 26 of the county's 73 libraries by Lancashire County Council towards the end of 2016, a new administration was elected in May 2017, and decided to re-open as many libraries as possible.
The council has taken the opportunity to relocate Earby Library as its previous home at Coronation Hall on Cemetery Road was in poor condition and not well-suited to a modern library service.
The new library has been fully refurbished with new shelving, furniture and fittings. Some of the stock remains from the old library, but a significant amount of new books have also been bought to ensure that the collection is up to date and relevant.
County Councillor Riggott said: "Local libraries are one of the most valued services provided by the county council.
"Having a library within easy reach allows everyone, whatever their circumstances, to be able to access information via the internet, browse and order from an enormous catalogue of books, and find out about local events and activities.
"The new Earby Library is a more modern facility in a more central location, and provides new opportunities to maximise its use by working with the groups which already use the community centre, and attract everyone who comes here for events and activities."
Lancashire County Council's cabinet has so far made decisions to reopen 13 libraries, and agreed to transfer the ownership of a further seven libraries to local organisations which will operate them as independent community-run libraries. The county council is continuing to work towards reopening libraries in all of the areas where they were closed.
Opening times for Earby Library are:
Tuesday 1pm – 7pm
Thursday 9am – 1pm
Friday 1pm – 5pm
Saturday 9am – 1pm
