Getting ready to start school top tips

Starting school is a big moment for children (as well as their parents or carers) - and it can be both an exciting and nervous time. There is so much information to be given and absorb and lots of things to remember.

We want to help encourage and support families so that children are supported to have a better start in life, to support their futures.

A video and top tips are available on our website to help raise the importance of children being ready for school by 5. It has been made available by Lancashire County Council Public Health Team for families living in or moving into Lancashire.

These resources share ways in which parents or carers can show, support and encourage involvement and responsibility for their children being school ready. The video follows families playing out the school day together in a school setting. The messages highlight:

  • communication
  • encouraging independence
  • making friends and interacting with others in a new environment

It also includes signposting to where families will be able to find more information and support.

Please use and share these resources with families to help everyone get ready for school. You can share the link: or download the top tips as a leaflet:
