Ormskirk Eastern Gateway Project

This project was a partnership between Lancashire County Council, West Lancashire Borough Council and Historic England to make a number of major improvements to Ormskirk town centre focused on the area around St Helens Road, Moor Street and Ormskirk Bus Station.

The majority of the £3.4m scheme was delivered during 2022/23. The aim was to support the local economy by making the area more attractive for everyone who lives, visits, shops and works in Ormskirk, as well as encouraging sustainable travel by improving public transport, walking and cycling facilities.

The project has received funding from Lancashire County Council, West Lancashire Borough Council, Historic England's Heritage Action Zone fund, and the Lancashire Economic Recovery Growth Fund, which was established by the county council to support projects to help local economies bounce back from the impacts of Covid-19.

The project

The main elements of the project were:

  • Bus station - To replace the existing bus station with a more modern facility featuring high- quality bus shelters, improved street lighting, public toilets, repaved pedestrian areas and improved landscaping.
  • Safer walking routes and dedicated cycle lanes – This included improving the St Helens Road-Moor Street junction and providing a dedicated cycle lane on St Helens Road. A new segregated cycle path has also created a better connection between the bus station and the railway station. These features provide a safer environment for pedestrians and encourage more people to use their bikes for regular journeys.
  • Moor Street upgrade – New paving, benches and other high quality street furniture to improve the look and feel of the area, and encourage further business investment.
