Hendon Brook Short Stay School

Lancashire County Council is proposing to consult on the future of Hendon Brook Short Stay School, Nelson BB9 8BP.  All interested parties are invited to share their views on this proposal, which includes giving consideration to the possibility of the school closing. Should the decision be taken to close the school, this would come into effect from 31 August 2020.

A consultation booklet (PDF 946 KB) provides more information about the proposal. We can provide copies of the consultation document to members of the local community on request.

A consultation will run until 18 October 2019. This is a period of consultation during which the views of any interested parties are sought and which will be considered before any move to the more formal stages of the statutory process.

Cabinet reports and decisions

On 13 June 2019, cabinet gave their approval for a stage one consultation to take place on this proposal from 9 September to 18 October 2019.

Background

Hendon Brook Short Stay School was judged inadequate by Ofsted in April 2017. A monitoring visit in January 2019 concluded the school was not taking sufficient action to remove the need for special measures.

Owing to the continuing low standards at the school, the local authority has decided to restrict the number of new admissions, which means there are currently only 17 pupils on roll. As a result, the school's costs are much higher than its income, which means it is no longer financially viable.

The school has struggled to recruit and retain good staff and this has had an effect on the quality of teaching and the results achieved by pupils.

The school building is not well designed for its current purpose and it would be very expensive to modernise.

As a result, cabinet made the decision for Lancashire County Council to proceed with the consultation.
