Who is this course for?

Social Workers, Team managers, Social Care Support Officers and Occupational Therapists.
APPLICATIONS FROM STUDENT SOCIAL WORKERS WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED IF RECEIVED WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF THE COURSE DATE. ANY APPLICATIONS RECEIVED BEFORE THIS WILL BE DELETED FROM THE SYSTEM.

Aims

To define and understand the term ‘learning disability’, the causes of impairment and the political, medical and social consequences of having a learning disability, enabling a more Person Centred approach to individuals. Interaction and discussion are encouraged.

Objectives

At the end of the course participants will be able to:
• Define the term 'learning disability'.
• Describe causes of learning disability (genetic and environmental).
• Outline the effects of terminology and labelling (advantages and disadvantages).
• Describe the historical categorisation of learning disability, including 'mental age' and 'IQ'.
• Outline statistical indications of prevalence.
• Describe some specific conditions and their features.
• Outline some associated sensory and motor impairments (including hearing and sight).
• Describe the possible impact of learning disability for the individual, including educational, physical, social and psychological
