Lancashire at Work: a Profile of Businesses in Lancashire
This section of Lancashire Profile holds miscellaneous information about Lancashire based companies. Some of this is available elsewhere on the site but has been brought together here for ease of reference. The terms "company" or "business" are used loosely to include both private sector for profit enterprises as well as establishments providing "public" services such as education, health and welfare, as well as various social enterprises, a number of which are charitable organisations.
Lancashire has a very large business headcount. Businesses registered for VAT in the sub-region totalled more than 39,100 at the start of 2006, for example. Under a different measure, a count of the number of "units" or establishments in Lancashire covering all addresses where there is at least one employee places the total at about 52,800. Additionally, there are an estimated 80,000 self-employed people resident in the area. Some of these may also run a VAT-registered business and some may have employees.
