Lancashire is a large and diverse sub-region of the North West of England. It comprises the administrative County of Lancashire, encompassing twelve county districts, together with Blackburn with Darwen and Blackpool unitary authorities. Internally, the region is a many-faceted one and incorporates some quite clear-cut geographical and socio-economic differences. This diversity is reflected in the range of Area Profiles listed above. They are largely in the form of statistical tables, providing quick reference material which is updated as and when new sources of information become available. More detailed analysis and commentary may often be found in the Research Monitors.
The Profiles often make reference to the Lancashire NUTS-2 region. This refers to the geography based on European-defined statistical units - the so-called 'Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics' (NUTS). In the case of Lancashire, the county of Lancashire together with the two unitary authorities of Blackburn with Darwen and Blackpool comprise a sub-regional NUTS-2 area. Each of the three areas are also separately NUTS-3 areas or 'local areas'.
