Tarleton road junction widening work to begin

Work to tackle queuing at the A565 Southport New Rd and A59 Liverpool Road junction in Tarleton will begin next week.

This improvement scheme, which starts on Monday 5 February, is scheduled to take three weeks.

The Lancashire County Council scheme involves creating a new dedicated right-turn lane for eastbound traffic traveling towards Liverpool on the A565 Southport New Road. This will reduce delays for vehicles travelling straight ahead at the junction.

Highways teams will be widening the A565, demolishing and rebuilding the central island in a new position, laying new anti-skid surfacing and road markings and improving the traffic lights system.

Lanes will be closed so that the work can take place. The team will operate temporary traffic lights when needed, but will keep their use to a minimum.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "The new right-turn lane and traffic lights system will help to cut queueing traffic at this busy junction.

"New road markings and anti-skid surfacing will also make the junction safer.

"There will be some disruption while the work is ongoing and we're sorry for any inconvenience this will cause. However, we're using lane closures and temporary traffic lights, which will be operated manually by the highways team when required. The team will do all they can to keep delays to a minimum while the work is carried out.

"These much-needed improvements will cut journey times significantly once the work is complete."
