Council to bid for flood defence funds

Lancashire County Council is bidding for funding to help pay towards improvements to flood defences along the River Ribble.

The scheme is being led by Lancashire County Council and will be delivered by the Environment Agency. It aims to improve existing and build new defences in Preston and South Ribble to offer homes and businesses improved flood protection.

The county council's cabinet has agreed to back a £5.7m bid to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government towards the total cost of the scheme which is currently estimated at around £40m.

Consultation with residents and businesses on the proposed improvements is already underway, being led by the Environment Agency, and supported by Preston City Council, South Ribble Borough Council, United Utilities, and the county council's Flood Risk Management service.

County Councillor Albert Atkinson, deputy leader for Lancashire County Council, said: "Our flood risk management team is working closely with communities and organisations responsible for managing water to investigate the causes of flooding, and work towards reducing the impact of future events.

"The Environment Agency has identified that these defences are in need of substantial upgrading, and has access to funds available to protect people's homes to meet most of the cost of the scheme.

"However, the county council is eligible to apply for further funding available which if successful will help to pay for the first phase of the scheme.

"Our outline funding bid has already been successful, and we have now been invited to make a full submission, which cabinet is happy to support. We understand all too well in Lancashire the terrible impact which flooding can have, and recognise how important it is to do all we reasonably can to reduce the impact of future incidents."

The Preston Riversway and Broadgate Flood Risk Management Scheme will provide improved flood protection to homes and businesses, and key infrastructure, by raising existing defences and building new defences where they are needed.
