Lancashire County Council's flagship programme to reopen libraries which closed over a year ago marked another milestone today as Burnley Campus Library became the latest to reopen to the public.
The first to reopen in East Lancashire, the library on Barden Lane was reopened this morning (Monday 27 November) by County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for community and cultural services.
Following the closure of 26 of the county's 73 libraries by Lancashire County Council towards the end of 2016, a new administration was elected in May, and has decided to re-open as many libraries as possible.
Plans have been agreed in recent months for the phased reopening of libraries, and Burnley Campus is the third to reopen following the reopening of Silverdale library and Parbold library earlier this month. Many more are due to reopen over the coming months.
The reopening of Burnley Campus Library coincides with Lancashire Day, and to mark the occasion a display of old photographs promoting the digital local history collection was unveiled, with Lancashire-themed refreshments also available to visitors.
County Councillor Buckley said: "Local libraries are a vital service at the heart of our communities, providing free access to books, information, and the internet for leisure and learning alike.
"Burnley Campus Library is an important part of the wider facilities on the same site which include a primary school, special school, nursery school, and sixth-form, providing a valuable service to everyone who visits the campus as well as the wider community.
"We're committed to reopening libraries wherever they've been closed, and I'm very pleased to be able to reopen Burnley Campus Library.
"This marks another important milestone in our programme to reopen libraries, and I look forward to reopening many more over the coming months."
Lancashire County Council's cabinet has so far made decisions to reopen 13 libraries, and agreed to transfer the ownership of a further six libraries to local organisations which will operate them as independent community libraries. The county council is continuing work towards reopening libraries in all of the areas where libraries were closed.
Opening times for Burnley Campus Library will be:
Monday 9am - 7pm
Wednesday 9am - 5pm
Thursday 9am - 1pm
Friday 9am - 5pm
Saturday 9am - 1pm
