Lancashire County Council's flagship programme to reopen libraries which closed over a year ago marked a major milestone today as Silverdale Library became the first to reopen to the public.
The library, in the far north of the county, was reopened by the leader of Lancashire County Council, Geoff Driver CBE this morning (Wednesday 1 November).
Following the closure of 26 of the county's 73 libraries towards the end of 2016, the county council's new administration, elected in May, is committed to reopening as many libraries as possible.
Plans have been agreed in recent months for the phased reopening of libraries, with many others due to follow in the coming months.
County Councillor Driver said: "We recognise that libraries are one of the most valued services the county council provides, and are committed to reopening them wherever they've been closed.
"Silverdale Library, serving a small community in the north of Lancashire, illustrates why our widespread network of libraries is so important, by providing free access to books, information, and the internet where people can easily reach them.
"I'm very pleased to be able to reopen Silverdale Library, restoring those vital services to this village.
"The issues associated with reopening are different for each library, and in many cases as the buildings were prepared for disposal, books and furniture were removed, along with internet connections and other IT infrastructure. In some cases there are also issues with the condition of the buildings.
"All of this takes time to resolve, however today we've reached a very important milestone in our programme to restore vital library services to Lancashire's communities, and can look forward to reopening many more over the coming months."
Lancashire County Council's cabinet has so far made decisions to reopen 13 libraries, and agreed to transfer the ownership of a further six libraries to local organisations which will operate them as independent community libraries. The county council is continuing work towards reopening libraries in all of the areas where libraries were closed.
Opening times for Silverdale Library are as follows:
Monday – 1pm – 5pm
Wednesday – 9am – 1pm
Thursday – 1pm – 7pm
Friday – closed
Saturday 9am – 1pm
