Originally these would have been the texts of lectures and papers delivered to the Society meetings. These provide a source of secondary historical material.
Examples of titles are:
'Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire'
(Founded 1848 for furtherance of historical research in two counties and to
keep a written record of historical facts and modern changes)
'Transactions of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological
Society'
(Founded 1866 for investigation, description and preservation of antiquities,
archaeology and historical records of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire
north-of-the-sands)
'Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society'
(Founded 1883 to examine, preserve and illustrate ancient monuments and records,
and to promote the study of history, architecture, literature, arts, customs
and traditions of Lancashire and Cheshire)
For more information about holdings of transactions of societies in our libraries, please see the 'Guide to Lancashire Local Studies and Family History Collections' (Section 12). Many of these transactions can also be found on our book catalogue.
Our online indexes to some of the above Transactions are currently in development.
