4. Scope and arrangement of the collection

The Local Studies Collection is housed in the Reference Library on the first floor of the Harris Library. Although much of the material in the collection is essentially historical, it is intended that every aspect of life and work, past and present, within the Preston City Council area should be represented. In addition to Preston and Fulwood, the villages of Barton, Broughton, Goosnargh, Grimsargh, Whittingham and Woodplumpton lie within the city’s boundary.

General geographical and historical studies covering other areas of the county are acquired when published, but more specialised or ephemeral material on such places is not actively sought.

The books, pamphlets and other printed works are arranged according to the Lancashire County Library’s Local Studies Classification Scheme. Collections of maps, photographs, postcards, ephemera and newspaper cuttings are also held.

The earliest directories held are : -

TUNNICLIFF, William. Topographical survey of the counties of Stafford, Chester and Lancaster, 1787.

The Commercial Directory for 1816 – 17.

From this date to 1968 a good collection of directories is held, the majority published by Barrett. Some cover only the city of Preston, others include neighbouring areas in central Lancashire and the Fylde.

7. Electoral registers

Up to 1868 the registers cover Preston Borough only. From the mid 1880s Fulwood is also included. From 1949-1974 part of Walton-le-Dale is included but from 1974 onwards the registers cover Preston Borough/City. The following years are covered:

1832/42, 1845/46, 1846/47, 1861/62, 1863/64, 1864/65, 1865/66, 1866/67, 1868, 1870, 1879/80, 1880/81, 1882/83 - 1922/23, 1929/30 - 1939/40, 1945/46 - .

In addition South Fylde (part) is held for 1949 - 50, 1968/9 - 1971/2.

8. Rate books

Preston Poor Law rate assessment book, 1806, and Revaluation of Rates - Preston Union: Assessment volumes, 1911, have been transferred to the Lancashire Record Office, the main repository for rate books for the county.

9. Census enumerators' returns

The 1801 census for Preston is a rare survival, a manuscript volume listing the head of each household, where he came from and the number of people in the household. The list has been transcribed.

Microfilm/fiche copies of the census for the present Preston City area for 1841 to 1901. Some returns are held for villages in adjacent districts but coverage for these is very imperfect. Street and surname indexes have been compiled for 1841 to 1891. 1901 has a street index only, surname searching being available on the internet. Copies of maps roughly contemporary with each census up to 1891 have been marked out to show the boundaries of each enumeration district.

11. Newspapers

The Preston Guardian, Preston Chronicle and Preston Pilot served to some extent as regional newspapers for central Lancashire in the 19th Century. The Preston Guardian carried regular news columns headed "Clitheroe", "Gt. Harwood" etc., noting local events, and eventually became the Farmers' Guardian.

Note: The indexing indicated below has not been carried out in depth, apart from the Lancashire Evening Post, which has been quite detailed for Preston material from 1971 onwards, except for such subjects as criminal acts, sports reports and minor human interest stories.

Newspaper cuttings

Several volumes on matters of local interest 1929 onwards, e.g. history, biography, Preston Guild, Harris Library, Central Lancashire New Town. Most volumes include a manuscript index and a cumulated A - Z index has been produced. From the 1970s cuttings are mounted on card and filed by subject. Annual indexes are available for this sequence from 1971 to 1989 and the indexes from 1990 are searchable on Lancashire Lantern.

13. Maps and plans

The library holds various small scale maps of Lancashire dating from the early 17th century onwards, including C. & J. Greenwood's map of 1818. Several street maps of Preston are held: - c1690, 1774, 1809, 1824, 1836, 1852, 1865 to date, scales vary.

Ordnance Survey.

1" to 1 mile maps. The Lancashire sheets of the David and Charles reprint of the 1st edition, originally published in the early 1840s, are held, and for the 1870s-1880s a full set of sheets for Great Britain forms part of the collection. Various sheets covering the Preston area are held for the 20th century, including 1920, 1947, 1954 and 1961.

15. Illustrations

A large collection of mostly black and white photographs, dating from the 19th century to the present, of Preston events, scenes and buildings. Includes the collection of the Preston Scientific Society and various subject albums, such as Preston Guild 1902 and the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.

Aerial photographs - black and white prints and some colour, Preston area, 1930s - 1990s.

A collection of postcards of Preston dating from the early twentieth century to the present. Also an album of Longridge postcards c1910-20.

Miscellaneous collection of printed ephemera relating to Preston including, engravings, theatre bills, Guild programmes etc.

Photocopies and/or photographic copies can be made in some cases; inquiries should be made to the library staff concerning the availability of these services.

The Library is currently developing an online database of photographs from the county’s various library collections; this is available as part of Lancashire Lantern .

17. Documentary material

None. The main repository of archives for the county is held at the Lancashire Record Office.

18. Special collections

Harkness collection of broadsides. The collection of several hundred broadsides, mostly of the first half of the 19th century, includes many produced by John Harkness, the Preston printer, as well as a number by Catnach and others. They are nearly all street ballads. Title list available for consultation. Also available on CD-ROM.

Francis Thompson collection of manuscripts, texts and critical works , relating to the Preston-born poet. A centenary catalogue of the collection was produced in 1959.
