Lancashire Libraries on-line
Through the national New Opportunities Fund, the People's Network will establish free community access to the internet and the National Grid for Learning in every public library in the UK by December 2002.
Free public access to the internet, e-mail, Microsoft Office applications and CDRom is currently available in all of Lancashire's 84 static libraries.
Reserve a People's Network PC
You can now book a PC on the People's Network on-line. You will need your card number and pincode.
At each library on the network there will be Express PCs for quick access to the library catalogue, the internet and e-mail and Explorer PCs for those wishing to carry out more detailed enquiry and study work.
Explorer PCs may be booked up to one week in advance - please ask staff for details.
(Note: You have to be a member of the library to use the Explorer PCs.)
Printed user manuals will be available detailing Acceptable Use policy and containing self-help guides to MS Office and Internet Explorer. Guides to assist those researching family history, to news sites, children's sites etc are also included.
Library staff are available to operate the booking system and to help users to get started.
If any user requires more than a couple of minutes of attention then staff may be able to recommend a self-learning package or to provide details of courses available locally - some of which may be held on library premises.
As an aid for visually impaired people, Supernova reader magnifier software is installed on all PCs, enabling people with visual impairments to magnify the screen. It also read information aloud, so that users can listen to the computer instead of looking at the screen.
