Exploring the health of Lancashire

Lancashire County Library and Information Service is celebrating Local and Community History Month 2008 by looking at Local Health issues.

There are events and displays all around the County and you can view details by looking through our brochure for the month. In addition you can also check out these links which will illuminate the history of health in our area.

  1. Lancashire Libraries provide free access to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography – this page gives specific details on people connected with Lancashire who have worked in the field of health.
  2. Listen to these fascinating Sound clips from the North West Sound Archive. The Archive strives to “record, collect and preserve sound recordings of the life, character, history and traditions of the north west of England” and is the pre-eminent oral history resource for the area. nwsa@ed.lancscc.gov.uk .
  3. Lancashire Record Office is displaying these posters in various Lancashire Libraries looking at these aspects of Health and Healthcare – Nursing, Sanitation, Healthcare and Mental Health.
  4. Our Own Image Archive is placing our photograph collections online and you can see some of the images on the subjects of Health, Welfare and Living Conditions .
  5. Lancaster Library has produced its own list of health related websites .
