Crook O'Lune

The Crook O'Lune picnic site is situated at a popular beauty spot on a horse shoe bend in the River Lune to the North of Lancaster.

Many pleasant walks are available alongside the wooded river banks and venturing off into the surrounding countryside. For longer walks the Lune Millennium Cycleway which also forms part of the Lancashire Cycleway follows a former railway line and connects this site to Lancaster and Bull Beck picnic site to the north.

Facilities

The main car parking area has two car parks, the rear one having a height restriction of 2.16m. Parking charges apply.

In the front car park there are three marked bays for blue badge holders. These bays are within 30m of the toilet block and refreshment trailer. The approach to these facilities is smooth and level, the immediate surroundings are paved to give good surface change definition for partially sighted visitors.

The entrance to the toilets has a 10cm step in the door way but there is a wheel chair accessible toilet operating on a Radar key system. Within 5m of the designated bays there is a picnic table adapted for wheelchair access offering scenic views up the Lune Valley towards Hornby. A tarmac ramp, 2m wide descends gently from along side the blue badge bays opposite the toilet block to the old railway bridge over the Lune and continues to the waters edge a distance of 100m to the river bank and 180m to the centre of the bridge.

Following the tarmac path over the Lune towards Caton leads to a ramp on the left which gives access to the main picnic area by the Lune. Two gates and a kissing gate have to be passed and a road crossing made. The gates are 1.4m wide and the kissing gate opens to 75cm. The road crossing point has dropped kerbs. This picnic site also has a specially constructed table for wheelchair access and the total distance from the car park is 400m.

There is limited roadside parking closer to this area, 50m from the gate. The ramp from the main car park leads, to the Lune Millennium Cycleway, a footpath and cycleway from Caton through Lancaster to Glasson Dock following the old railway line.
