Population history 1891-2011

The following table lists the population figures for the Lancashire-14 area from 1891 to 2011. Over the 120 year period, the population increased by over 570,000 or 64.2%.

The table emphasises the very sharp differentials between population changes over various time periods. The tremendous growth of over 135,000 between 1891 and 1901 was far greater than the second largest 10-year increase of 83,575 between 1961 and 1971. In contrast, the 18-year period from 1921 to 1939 saw a combined growth figures growth of just 10,166, whilst a small reduction occurred between 1981 and 1991. The last two census periods have both highlighted modest growth of 0.3% for each 10-year period.
