The Future Horizons scheme is a structured training programme for 16-18 year olds to improve your employability skills.

The programme includes up to 15 weeks work placement in the council, a local district council or a private business to enhance your work experience.

On the programme you will work towards the City and Guilds employability and personal development qualification which will prepare you for working towards an apprenticeship.

There are a variety of placements available including clerical/administrative roles, customer service, practical outdoors work and work in a school.

After you complete the Future Horizons programme there are also opportunities to link to the more manual roles within the private sector on an apprenticeship; for example, hairdresser, mechanic, electrician or tree surgeon. These are subject to availability.


Future Horizons can offer you:

  • The chance to try an area of work to see if you like it and to start building up your skills in this area
  • Help with your application forms and interview practice
  • The opportunity to prove your work quality and quantity
  • Good quality work experience to put on your CV and application forms
  • A real work reference
  • Continued support from the training provider and the council after the programme has ended


To qualify for Future Horizons, you must:

  • Not be studying, working or on a training course
  • Be aged 16-18
  • Be committed to being punctual and completing the programme
