Mental health

Mental health is affected by many cultural, social, economic and environmental factors. To improve your mental health and wellbeing there are lots of resources available to support you to develop the skills to feel good.

Would you like support?

Our Lancashire Wellbeing Service supports people to achieve the five ways to wellbeing. This service is for anyone from the age of 18 upwards.

Lancashire Wellbeing Service provides a 'wellbeing' assessment followed by up to eight sessions of one-to-one practical support.  The sessions are designed to help you access community resources such as motivational or confidence courses, gym or exercise groups, volunteering, training, supported employment schemes, advice and information, self-help or peer support groups, counselling, complimentary therapies and social or leisure activities. The service can also provide home visits for anyone who is house bound or feeling socially isolated.

Books on Prescription Books on Prescription is a national scheme that aims to help people manage their own wellbeing. Books can be  reserved and borrowed for free from any of Lancashire County Council's libraries.  Books available cover helpful information and self-help techniques for managing common conditions that include: Anger ~ Anxiety ~ Depression ~ Eating ~ Fatigue ~ Health ~ OCD ~ Pain ~ Panic ~ Phobias ~ Relationships ~ Self-esteem ~ Shyness ~ Sleep ~ Stress ~ Worry.
Reading for Health

 A new national scheme will make a selection of books available across Lancashire to help people living with long-term health issues improve their health and wellbeing through self-help reading.

The scheme 'Reading Well for Long-Term Conditions' has been developed from the successful Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme, in collaboration with leading health organisations and people living with health conditions and their carers. The books cover specific conditions including diabetes, stroke and asthma, as well as common symptoms including pain and fatigue which can affect your mental health and well-being.

Under the scheme, 28 self-help books will be available in all Lancashire libraries. All of these recommended titles provide adults with advice, information and support to help them to understand and manage the physical and mental symptoms of living with a long term condition.

Minds Matters  Promote increasing access to psychological therapies (IAPT) and work with adults from the age of 16 upwards.

Online Support

Silvercloud  An online course to help people manage stress, anxiety and depression. You work through a series of topics selected by a therapist to address specific needs. The eight-week course is designed to be completed in your own time and at your own pace. 
Big White Wall  Big White Wall is a digital support and recovery service for people who are stressed, anxious, low or not coping. At the heart of Big White Wall is its community of members, who support and help each other share what’s troubling them in a safe and anonymous environment, with the guidance of trained professionals, who are online 24/7.

Training

We currently commission Positive Action in the Community (PAC) to facilitate and deliver mental health training. 

Training areas include:

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training; teaching about the warning signs of mental illness.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid
developed by Living Works.

Safetalk; A half-day alertness training developed by Living Works that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Since its development in 2006, safeTALK has been used in over 20 countries around the world.
