Our assessment process

Assessment

The assessment stage takes 8-16 weeks:

  • We will carry out checks such as a police check of you and anyone in your household who is over 16 and ask for a medical reference from your doctor. We’ll also get personal references from people who know you well, including members of your family
  • You’ll need to attend a preparation course called skills to foster. You can do this during the day, in the evening, or at weekends - whatever suits you best. There you'll meet our social workers and other people who have applied to be foster carers.
  • A main part of your assessment will include talking about your history, experience and expectations with your social worker.
  • The fostering panel will make their recommendation and the decision maker (an experienced social worker) will decide whether you have been approved
