Motorcyclists

Reflections - Summer Motorcycling campaign

In 2007 too many motorcyclists were killed or seriously injured on our county's roads.

Lancashire Constabulary have teamed up with us - the Road Safety Group -  to bring you 'The Reflections Motorcylists Campaign'.  It's a campaign that will run throughout the summer riding season that aims make people think about their riding and driving.

We want to work with riders and drivers to make sure motorcyclists in Lancashire can enjoy their ride - as much as they can but as safely as they can.

Riders

As a motorcyclist, you will be well aware how vulnerable you are out on the roads but once the rush of the ride catches hold of you, your good intentions and safety procedures can do a disappearing act.

Police will be out in force during July, August and September helping to keep the roads safe.  This means that if you are caught breaking the law whilst out on your bike, you will be prosecuted.

We have put some advice together to help maximise your enjoyment and minimise your risk:

  • Look into the future – scanning further ahead for hazards will allow you to take in more of the landscape and plan ahead.
  • Make Predictions – We’re not suggesting that you go all ‘Mystic Meg’ on us but try to anticipate what other motorists are likely to do next.
  • Make a Position Statement – Get yourself in the best place - usually towards a more central position on your side of the road – but don’t frustrate people who may want to pass you. Let people know what you are about to do by taking your position early.
  • Be Prepared – The old scouting motto applies out on the road. Stay at a speed that will allow you to stop in good time if you need to. Give yourself even more time if it's wet, foggy or misty.
  • Be a hero – by taking a ‘lifesaver’ glance over your shoulder before changing position to see whether other motorists are hiding in your blind spots..
  • Lead by example – Overtaking – Ask your self; Is it necessary, safe and legal? If not – don’t do it. Check for hazards as well as oncoming traffic.
  • Stand out from the crowd – Whether it’s a bright helmet or a hi-vis jacket make sure people can see you. Dipped headlights, even in good daylight, can also help you to be seen.
  • Never assume that you have been seen.
  • Learn from the best – to get the most out of your ride try our free rider assessment . Whatever level of rider you are the Road Safety Group can help.

Drivers

Over 62% of motorcycle crashes are not caused by the biker

You don’t have to make big changes to help keep motorcyclists safe on our roads. Here’s a few tips…

  • Before setting off or changing your road position, check your blind spots as motorcyclists can be hard to see.
  •  Check your mirrors regularly – take time to look, and see.
  • Always check your side mirrors before you make a turn or change position.
  • Give motorcyclists plenty of room at roundabouts.
  • When overtaking motorcyclists, give them as much room as you would for a car.
  • Riders may need to move to avoid potholes or other surface hazards that you may not see.
  • If you want to refresh your driving skills and get some tips for staying safe on the roads, why not book yourself in for a Drive On Session?
