Paving The Way

19 August, 2008

Paving The Way is a resource which was initiated by the Scottish Road Safety Campaign at the request of various day centres run by the Scottish Social Work Department for adults with learning disabilities. The material is also suitable for use in schools with pupils with special educational needs.

Aims

  • To increase each student's understanding of the road environment;
  • To encourage the independent and safe mobility of those students for whom it is possible.

Objectives

After using the core material students should be able to:

  • distinguish between roads and pavements;
  • identify who/what uses roads and pavements;
  • demonstrate the correct walking procedure and behaviour when on a pavement and crossing a road;
  • recognise controlled crossing places;
  • demonstrate the correct crossing procedure for crossing a quiet road/street;
  • identify possible dangers both on and off the pavement.
