Olympics Cycling Tips

BUDDING cyclists are being given tips on how to stay safe by Lancashire County Council’s Road Safety Group.

Clare Farrer, Deputy Road Safety Group Manager, said:

“The success of Lancashire cyclist Steven Burke in this year’s Olympics has encouraged many people to get on their bikes, some for the very first time.”

Cycling is a great way to keep fit and is also a good way to reduce your carbon footprint, but it’s really important you know how to stay safe before you start. We have put together some top tips to help get you get on your bike safely.”

So whether you are a new or experienced cyclist, young or old, here are some reminders to help keep you safe:

  • Always wear a cycle helmet - around three quarters of cyclists killed have major head injuries. Ensure it is correctly fitted and complies with recognised safety standards.
  • Cycling on the pavement is illegal, so get off and walk if you have no alternative.
  • Obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals. Don't cross the stop line when a traffic signal is red.
  • Be seen! Use a white front light and a red rear light with reflector at night - flashing lights ARE now legal, so can be used if preferred. Try to wear light coloured or reflective clothing in the dark.
  • Get defensive. Look out for other road users and be aware of what they are doing.
  • Let people know what you are doing. Look all around you before pulling away or manoeuvring and signal clearly.
  • Look all around - try to spot potholes, drains and rubbish in the road soon enough to avoid them - and give parked cars a wide berth just in case a car door opens suddenly. Look behind and in front to check it's safe before changing position on the road.
  • Use cycle routes and cycle lanes where possible.
