Make school journeys safe journeys

PARENTS across the county are being given tips on keeping their child safe as they take part in this year’s Walk to School Week.

Lancashire County Council’s Road Safety Group have put together the advice for parents to help make their child’s journey to school a safe one.

Clare Farrer, Deputy Group Manager, said:

“Many children may be walking to school for the first time this week and it’s really important that they know how to stay safe. Around one sixth of child road casualties are recorded as happening to or from school, however following our tips can help to prevent this.”

Top tips

  • As your child may not be used to walking along the route to school make sure you check the route and plan for any hazards along the way.
  • If you feel your child is too young to walk alone why not join them and spend some quality time together
  • Or find out if any of your child’s friends live in the area so they can share the journey.
  • Lead by example – if you run across the road or cross when the red man is showing your child will too.
  • Encourage your child not to use their mobile phones or listen to music when crossing roads as this will affect their concentration.

The Road Safety Group are always looking for ways to improve their services and would like to hear from you about how you teach your children about road safety.
