Legal Weapon

Presented by: The Ape Theatre Company

Target Group: 16 - 19 year olds

Toured: Spring 2005

Mark Wheeller's 'Legal Weapon' tells the fictional story of a sixth form couple 'Andy and Jazz'. Their relationship is punctuated by the death of Andy's granddad (a heart attack due to a break-in), a sizeable inheritance (spent on a performance car), brushes with the law (for speeding) and exam pressure. When Jazz goes to college, Andy drives their relationship to ruin.

The production blends themes of sport, gambling and violence with issues of speeding and driver attitude, using tight stylised physical theatre and live sound effects to whisk the action along at a blistering pace.

The production is followed by a workshop entitled 'Tweedy's Travels'. Students are encouraged to participate in the workshop, performing tasks and making choices.

Young drivers, particularly 17 to 19 year olds are the largest group represented in casualty statistics. No less than a third of Lancashire's 16 to 19 year old casualties are drivers. The vast majority of these crashes could have been avoided.
