“Grants to compensate Lancashire communities for the impacts of aggregate extraction”

The Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund started in 2002. It uses revenue from the Aggregates Levy (a tax on extracting stone) to address the impacts of aggregate extraction on the environment and local communities. The scheme is delivered under 4 Objectives. These are:

1st Objective – Less Extraction

2nd Objective – More environmentally friendly extraction and transport

3rd Objective – Addressing past impacts of quarrying activity

4th Objective – Compensating local communities for the impacts of aggregates extraction

Lancashire County Council have been asked by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to deliver the fourth objective along with 16 other County Councils located in areas with the highest amounts of aggregate extraction in England.

ALSF News

We are now developing a list of possible projects for 2008. The Word document below is a Project Proposal Form which we would encourage anybody with a project idea to complete and send back to the Environmental Projects Team. This can be done by post or by email.

If you would like to apply for Lancashire Aggregates Levy Funding for your community project please ensure that your project can fulfil the following criteria:

Gravel Digger

  1. That the area suffers from demonstrable environmental impact as a result of the activity of an active aggregate extraction quarry. This may take the form of:
    • Disturbance caused by noise from blasting and machinery;
    • The effects of increased quarry traffic including increased noise, dust, mud and pedestrian safety issues;
    • Reduced quality public urban space and loss of amenity.
  2. That the proposal can clearly demonstrate public benefit.
  3. That your project can realistically be completed within the agreed financial year.
  4. That your project is located in Lancashire.

There are no strict rules about the sort of projects that qualify for support. However, we are interested in receiving Project Proposals from groups that seek to improve their local environment for community use and can make a lasting positive contribution. If you’d like to see some of the projects that have already received support please see these examples.

Lancashire has 16 active aggregate extractors occupying close to 1000 hectares of land in the county. View a map of the locations of these quarries and to see if there are any aggregates extractors near where you live.

What to do now

Please contact us to discuss your project. If there is no funding available, we may still be able to help you to develop your project.
