Traffic Signal

Traffic Signals

The Environment Directorate manage the County Council’s traffic control systems. These include over 200 traffic signal junctions and over 200 traffic signal pedestrian crossings (Pelican, Puffin, Toucan (pedestrian & cycle), and Pegasus (pedestrian & equestrians). This service seeks to increase the provision for vulnerable road users with a programme of additional crossing points and the provision of audible and tactile facilities for the visually impaired.

Many of the traffic signals in the larger urban areas are linked via a central computer system to minimise overall delays to travellers. In addition the service operates bus priority systems, car park management systems, and strategic traffic information signs. Data from most of the systems is being brought together into a central computer system, which is being developed to disseminate information to the police, major shopping centres, bus companies, and the public through the ‘transport for lancashire’ website.

The service also installs and maintains the Safety Camera cabinets on behalf of the Lancashire Road Safety Group, in addition to safety related variable message signs (eg ‘Slow Down’), and over-height vehicle detection/ warning systems on the approaches to low bridges.
