Glossary

The following terminology is used to refer to the various forms in which data relating to BHS is provided.

Biological Heritage Sites
Biological Heritage Site (BHS) is the term used to describe the top tier of non-statutory wildlife sites of nature conservation importance within the County of Lancashire. The system is operated jointly by a partnership of Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and English Nature (North West Team). BHSs have been identified after a review of all available ecological data including Phase 1 and Enhanced Phase 1 surveys, utilizing detailed site selection guidelines developed on a county-wide basis.

Site Record
The Site Record consists of all information relating to a single BHS.

Composite Site Boundary Plans
There are two sets of Composite Site Boundary Plans covering the whole County:

a) 1:10,000 scale Ordnance Survey sheets depicting the boundaries of all BHS which lie, in whole or part, within the area depicted. Each site is labeled with a reference number.

b) 1:50,000 scale Ordnance Survey sheets depicting the boundaries of all BHS which lie, in whole or part, within the area depicted.
