Public Rights of Way

Temporary Closures

A Public Right of Way may be temporarily closed by the landowner in order to do this you must first inform Rose Breslin, Public Rights of Way (Tel. No. 01772 531244) that a temporary closure is required approximately 4/6 weeks before the commencement date, giving the name of the site, Parish and Public Footpath/bridleway number and stating the reason why this closure is necessary. The duration time should be given and also any alternative routes that are available. It would be helpful if the applicant could enclose a map of the site.

Notices will be sent to the applicant for posting on site in due course.

The applicant will bear any advertising costs involved.
However, the cost can only be determined at the end of the duration time involved.

TIMES

Limit on temporary closure is 6 months, you will need to check 1 month before this time expires if an extension is required.

COSTS

County Council Administration cost of 5%.
Advertising: Roughly £300-£1000 but this depends on length of advert, detail and in which publication the advert is to appear. If extension is needed, it is necessary to go through the procedure again and to pay for readvertising.

Information we require from you.
A map indicating the length of right of way to be closed or diverted and the period of required closure along with reasons for closure, together with your written agreement to pay the Council's incurred costs.

It is of great assistance if applications are submitted at least 4-6 weeks prior to the diversion/closure being required.
