What is the Lancashire Locals Climate Change Fund?

The Lancashire Locals Climate Change Fund was launched at the end of 2007, with a total of £750,000 available shared over 3 years.

The fund has been established to support community projects on climate change, these projects can either be aimed at 'reducing greenhouse gas emissions', or helping communities to 'cope with the impacts of climate change'.

The fund is shared across all the 12 districts in Lancashire, and grants of £500 - £15,000 are available.

Who can apply?

The fund is open to voluntary organisations, community groups and parish/town councils. Unfortunately, the fund is not open to public sector organisations, schools or households. The project must be based within Lancashire County Council’s administrative area (unfortunately, we cannot fund projects based in the unitary areas of Blackburn with Darwen and Blackpool).

What projects are eligible for funding?

To be considered, the project must demonstrate that it reduces greenhouse gas emissions, or helps communities to cope with the impacts of climate change.

For example, projects might include:

  • Energy efficiency measures (for example insulation)
  • Community micro-renewable energy schemes
  • Carbon capture through tree planting or peat bog restoration
  • Community trabsport(cycling/walking) projects
  • Awareness raising and communications work

Priority will be given to projects that:

  • Are innovative or demonstrate best practice, capable of replication elsewhere in Lancashire.
  • Involve young people and or local community groups.

Please see guidance notes (word document 49kb) for full eligibility criteria.

To get an idea of the types of project the fund is aimed at, take a look at the case studies section, which highlights some of the projects that have previously received funding.

The Application and Appraisal process

  1. Applications are received in 3 rounds per year, the deadline for each round is:
    • 30th January 2009
    • 29th May 2009
    • 30th October 2009
  2. Interested groups can download the application form and guidance notes from this website.
  3. The application forms will be considered by an officer at the County Council who will have the necessary expertise to assess the suitability of the application. This appraisal officer will be your point of contact if you would like to discuss your application, and will establish if your project meets the climate change fund criteria.
  4. The appraisal officer will compile a report outlining the applications received (by district), and a recommendation. This report is sent to the relevant Lancashire Local committee. The Lancashire Locals Committee will then decide which projects receive funding.

Further Information

If you would like more information please contact the fund’s administration officer who will be able to provide guidance on eligibility criteria and the application / appraisal process.

Regrettably, we may only be able to provide very limited technical advice on renewable technologies. If you are thinking about installing renewable energy as part of your project, we advise you to get three quotes from suppliers. Under the Renewable Energy Suppliers section, you can search from accredited installers in Lancashire.
