How To Use Googlemaps

'Panning' means changing the area displayed by the map. If you think of the

If you press any of these arrow buttons, the map will pan in the appropriate direction.

You can also drag the display area with the mouse.

  • Place the cursor anywhere on the map away from map controls or marker points.
  • Hold down the left mouse button.
  • Move the cursor.
  • Release the left mouse button.

Zooming

'Zooming' is changing the size of the area shown bu the map.

With the Buttons

Pressing the + button zooms in to show a smaller area. Pressing the - button zooms out to show a larger area. If there is a slider between these buttons, you can also use it to set the zoom level directly.

Zoom levels do not relate to particular map scales.

Other Controls

Map/ Satelite/ Hybrid

These buttons change the type of map shown.

The 'Map' option is a normal graphical map showing different features at different zoom levels. At low zoom levels, these features might be town names and major roads. At higher zoom levels, all roads are shown, along with their names.

The 'Satelite' option shows a satelite photograpg of the area.

The 'Hybrid' option is a mixture of the two. The satelite image is used as a background for the map features.

Reset

Finally, there is the reset button reset. This puts the map back to how it started when the web page loaded.
