Historic Landscapes of Bowland and The Lune Valley

Jubilee Tower

View from Jubilee Tower

Jubilee Tower was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. It is perched on the side of Abbeystead Fell from where there are fabulous views on a clear day of north-west Lancashire, including Blackpool Tower on the coast, the Ashton Memorial in Lancaster, Morecambe Bay and the Cumbrian mountains beyond.

Coffin

During drainage works in 1973, a log coffin was discovered close to Jubilee Tower. The coffin, which has been dated to the 7th Century was found to contain part of a wool shroud, human hair and toe nails; the skin and bone having been dissolved by the acid peaty water. The burial is on display in Lancaster City Museum.
