Scheduled Ancient Monument - Cromwell's Mound

District: Preston
Name: Cromwell's Mound, Preston.
Description: Water control dam or pond-bay for the nearby Broughton Tower moat.
Assessment of importance: One of the water control features associated with the Broughton Tower moat. Such water control features are an integral part of the structure of a moat, and are important to their study as a class. There are few sites in the County where water control features have been identified at a distance to the moat.
Description : This mound is 37m long, 8m to 12m wide and from 0.1m to 1.9m high. The highest point is in the centre, and from this there is a ramp or causeway leading to the south west as if to give access to the lower ground. It is situated astride a narrow and shallow valley through which runs the Moss Leach Brook.
