Why Join?

"Staff morale is central to the ethos and creation of a highly achieving school, and also for sustaining success. It is vital that everyone feels to be an equal player and 'well-being' informs me of issues. It acts as a barometer and highlights areas for development, as well as fostering collective responsibility".
Primary School Headteacher

"The Well-Being Programme has made a valuable contribution to the school's overall improvement".

Welcome to the Lancashire Well-Being Programme

Well-Being logo

The Well-Being Programme was set up in Lancashire in September 2002, as part of a national programme run by Worklife Support. In the first year, 85 schools and services joined and the number has increased every year since then. We now have some organisations that have been working on the Programme for five years, as part of their long-term commitment to promoting staff well-being and creating and maintaining a healthy workplace.

What is the Well-Being Programme?

  • A whole school or service approach to staff well-being
  • Part of a national programme run in partnership with WorkLife Support (www.worklifesupport.com)
  • Led by a team of facilitators drawn from across the staff
  • Supported by a local authority coordinator
  • Includes a regular organisational health check/risk assessment based on the Health and Safety Executive's Management Standards for work-related stress
  • Involves everyone in working together to enhance the well-being of all employees
  • A completely confidential process - the only thing that is shared is learning and good practice

The Well-Being Programme adopts a 'bottom up' approach, where staff themselves work together to determine the approach their organisation should take. This ensures ownership by staff and long-term sustainability of a healthy working and learning environment. Volunteer facilitators are nominated in each school or service and they receive a day's induction, followed by support to enable them to work with colleagues in identifying not only what they would like to change, but how they will achieve this.

The Well-Being Programme links to and supports school self evaluation, stress management, management of change, absence management, Healthy Schools, IiP, SEAL and other current initiatives.
