How much do these courses cost?

All courses are free. The Learning & Skills Council provides funding, through the Adult Continuing Education Service, for post-16 tutors to work with parent and funding for pre-16 teachers to be released to work with the children where appropriate.

What commitment do schools and other venues have to make?

Venues need to be able to provide a room suitable for up to 9 adults and 9 children, or identify another venue in the local community where the adults can meet. If a pre-sixteen teacher is involved then there has to be a commitment to joint planning with the post-16 tutor and a willingness to monitor the benefits to the children.

We also ask venues to provide tea, coffee and biscuits to keep everyone going! Funding is also available for a crèche and bi-lingual support if needed.

My school finds it difficult to get parents into school. What can I do?

The Adult and Continuing Education Service employs Family Learning Organisers across the County who are willing to work with schools to try and find ways of encouraging parents to come along to events.

Learning TogetherI don't have any spare capacity in my school. Where could these courses take place?

There may be a local community centre or library where the parents could meet. Or you might like to run courses in partnership with a neighbouring school that has the space. Courses for parents only could be run after school or in the evenings.

I have a spare room but it is not suitable for adults to work in. What can I do?

There may be sources of funding available through the funding authorities. Your Zone contact may have useful information. Zones are usually able to supply resources and consumables to improve the service to learners.

How can I tell which of these courses is the right one for my school?

One of our Family Learning team would be happy to come out and talk with you and your staff about the right course for your school and your parents. Courses can often be adapted to meet the needs of individual schools and can link with other initiatives such as Healthy Schools or meet Ofsted action plans.

Learning TogetherMy parents have enjoyed courses we've run in the past and always want to do more. What opportunities are there?

A variety of courses can be offered, some of which can provide a progression pathway. In one school parents started with a Family Literacy workshop and some progressed on to a Teaching Assistants course. If you are interested in running a full programme of Family Learning courses contact your local Family Learning Organiser.

If you have a group of parents who are unsure what they want to do next one of our Adult Learning Advisers will be happy to visit to offer impartial information and advice.
