What is Building Schools for the Future (BSF)

Under this new Capital Initiative, the Government is seeking to support a transformation of secondary education and ensure that all secondary age children and young people have access to facilities of 21st Century standard. The intention is to renew and/or replace all secondary schools over a 10 to 15 year period beginning in 2005/2006.

Lancashire has been included in the first wave of the BSF programme which will cover schools in Burnley and part of Pendle.

Wave One

Phase 1 Update Leaflet

Our plans for the first wave of investment beginning in 2005/06 relate to secondary schools in Burnley and the Brierfield and Nelson areas of Pendle. Read Update Leaflet

In Burnley we will

  • replace the eight secondary schools, building five new 11-16 schools
  • build a new separate sixth form centre to replace existing school sixth forms
  • provide learning support units at each school
  • make all the new schools mixed schools
  • introduce new admission arrangements
  • co-locate special school provision with one of the proposed new schools

In Pendle we will

  • close Mansfield, Edge End and Walton High Schools
  • build two new 11-16 schools
  • provide learning support units at each school
  • introduce new admission arrangements for all secondary schools
  • co-locate a new special school on one of the new secondary school sites

Possible reorganisation of the four other secondary schools in Colne and Barnoldswick will be considered when details of BSF funding in later years are announced. For more details see Future BSF Funding

BSF is just one of many exciting initiatives in East Lancashire. To find out more see useful links.
